Chapter 1

2 minutes de lecture

The disaster was inevitable, years after human activities exacerbate a situation already catastrophic. The greenhouse gas emissions increased because of the deforestation, all the industrial activities, car pollution… All this pollution caused little by little climate change. People thought for a long time that their situation can’t be worst. That the cyclones, the typhon, the wildfire caused by the drought, the tsunami all over the world were the worst things which can happen. It was before the ozone depletion. Without the protection layer of our atmosphere, the sun’s UV rays began to mow down immeasurable damage. The cancer rate exploded; it was almost half of the population that was affected by the “disease of the century. But here again the worst was yet to come. The scientist called it the virus “Origin”. Contagious, extremely painful, it killed people in less than two weeks by attacking the very structure of their DNA. The first trace of this new kind of disease appeared in Europe, we do not know exactly where. To cope with the disease each state has tried his own solution. The United States has quaranted his territory from other, as have Germania and Russia. Most of the developing countries have fallen into civil wars because of too fragile institutions and most of the remaining developed countries including France, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy and England have allied themselves against the disease and have created research centers called “The hopes keepers” but we just call them the Keepers. Real impenetrable bunkers whose entrances are carefully controlled to prevent the virus from spreading inside. This is where I? Adam O. Merill, pure British gentleman, am working hard with my colleagues to find a vaccine for this deadly pandemic.

In my research section, we are five, each from a different country. There is Paul who is French, he sings nice old French songs all the time and make coffee too bitter. Then there’s Lucia, the Italian girl who speaks constantly and always too loudly but she’s the joy spark of the team. Lyam from Ireland who would rather sell his soul than separate himself from his old baseball cap he had from his father.

And then there is Abbie.

Abbie is Canadian, she arrived at the center few months after me, but she’s is, in contrast to me friends with everyone from the from housekeepers to the most senior people. The five of us makes a small family which, for these who have lost loved ones, has no cost. Our section oversees the research of the origin of the disease to try to understand under what conditions it was formed exactly in order to better understand the virus and a way to contain it. Research takes time because even with advanced equipment the center resources remain low and analyses take longer time than usual. But we don’t give up, we wake up every day knowing that our research will be able to make a big difference. It is a pressure on our shoulders but also a pride to be able to serve our countries and even our species.
