#5 - By the moonlight
Written expression: write a short story following the Gothic stories' caracteristics (closed ending).
Anna has always loved winter. From all the others, it was from far her favorite season. Warm up near a chimney, drink a hot chocolate… She just wanted to live in this part of the year for ever and ever. Anna put her suitcase on the bed which will be hers this night and started tidying her clothes in the wardrobe. Her mom has took them, her two children to spend a week with her. She was a famous writer of Gothic stories and to come in a real manor was one of her biggest dream since she was little. Thinking that her mom’s dream was realized put a pretty smile on the young lady’s face. She was about to close her empty suitcase when she heard a shout from her mom.
At first she only thought about an encounter between her and a spider or any kind of insect but the second scream seemed muffled. Her smile went suddenly. She hurried herself in the room. She was here, her mom. She had already arrange the little desk and had placed different kind of candles with an orange scent. When her daughter approached her she could not hold a shriek front of the awful scene she had ahead of her. Anna’s mom was lying on her bed and her face was lacerated so much that one could not recognize her. Her writs have been cut and her hands were on the carpet in a little puddle of dark blood. The young woman stepped back. All her body was shaking. Who could have done such an atrocity? All of a sudden the window opened. Moreover an extreme and cold gust penetrated, Anna banged against a wall. Her hair and some drips of rain slapped her face whereas she tried to regain consciousness. The scene had lasted less than a minute but its seemed to her an eternity. With a bad feeling, a nonsense courage, despite her head which hurt her terribly, her members were shaking to death… She went in her brother’s room with a hope. This was unreal, it was just a joke. A bad joke which was not funny at all. However when she entered, she found the same scene represented: face lacerated and wrists cut. She started crying. Tears of love, tears of terror, tears of pain which rolled down her cheeks.
At that moment, she saw the moon, which was particularly big that night. Without knowing why, she tried to open the window next to her brother’s body. A cold body. It was hard but Anna succeeded and jumped over it. She started running, straight, where the little breeze on her back telling her to go without turn over and paying attention to the heavy footsteps of the manor’s resident who followed her... Blow away her atrocious pain when she saw the bodies of the two only members of her family. Blow away her injuries on her hands, her barefoot. Everything was insignificant because of this beautiful moon. She sit up in the halo of light which was offered by the star. She was now lying down without knowing how in this heavy rain with her palms towards the sky and those sparkly stars which seemed to belong to her. When she saw the shadow of the inhabitant’s silhouette, it was already too late. A scream resonated. It was the last. Her last. Under this moon. This beautiful moon, which was particularly big, this night.
